M.2 NVMe SSDs- Are they really worth it?

SSD

Before we dive into the answer, we’ll need to find out what these new SSD interfaces are.

M.2 Form Factor

The M.2 form factor also called the Next Generation form factor (NGFF), is a modern expansion card. It is internally mounted and has replaced the former mini-standard (mSATA).

These M.2 drives are not connected or linked with the motherboard using cables like conventional SATA SSDs. They are plugged into the motherboard by using an M.2 connector slot.

The M.2 factor may use both standard SATA or the Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) interface. However, in both cases, it will be plugged with the motherboard.

Once connected, these devices are folded down and lie with the motherboard, unlike RAM chips or traditional SSDs. Fewer cables allow the internal structure of laptops to be cleaner and less cluttered.

The NVMe Interface

Non-Volatile Memory express (NVMe) deals with the way data is transferred and not with the shape or size of the drive. NVMe draws on the motherboard’s interface, which enables it to transfer the data at a much fast speed.

The speed of an NVMe drive can be up to seven times faster than usual SATA Solid State Drives.

Most NVMe uses the M.2 form factor for fitting into the motherboard. These drives are very expensive because of their faster speed and better response time.

Are M.2 and NVMe Worth Buying?

If you want to upgrade your gaming PC by installing an M.2, then you may first consider which drive you want to buy. There are two types of drives;

  • NVMe protocol
  • SATA protocol

Though NVMe is faster than SATA, it is more expensive. Also, there are chances that your motherboard may not be able to access data from the NVMe protocol if it hasn’t an M.2 slot.

It becomes imperative that you make sure which drive will be supportable with your motherboard and then buying the device.

Are the M.2 and NVMe Worth the Expense?

The speed boost and other facilities provided by the NVMe is a definite plus point when compared with other drivers. However, it must be kept in mind that the speed boost will be only visible when you are doing heavy load tasks.

In such cases, you may feel there is a significant speed boost and time-saving. But in all other random tasks, you may not feel a much greater difference. Though they will be a little fast than the previous drives, no significant outcome will be achieved.

You may make the expense if you want to increase the overall speed of your laptop or PC. It will be helpful if you are doing heavy tasks or gaming. However, if you just do regular tasks, then it may not be worth the expense.

Endnotes

After looking at the features and compatibility of the M.2 NVMe drive, one can say that these devices are worth it. Their overall speed and easy to fit features gives them an upper hand over previous devices.

Their high price may make buyers raise their eyebrows, but they are worth the price. However, before investing, one should always make sure that these devices are compatible with their laptop or desktop.
